Issue Summer 2006What’s Happening this SummerBy Steve Taylor, President
Our mixer at the Show Low Park last night (7/29) was great. We all had a good time. We raffled off 3 original pieces of art and auctioned off extra food and beverages. We just about covered our expenses. Mitch Menchaca and Mandy Buscas of the Arizona Commission on the Arts were in attendance after making a great presentation re: grants at NPC on Fri. pm On a sad note, we lost a dear friend last week! Marsha Smith left us suddenly, the result of a massive stroke. She will long be remembered for her sweet spirit and great talent. Those who are fortunate enough to have some of her fused glassware and jewelry will always be reminded of a sweet, wonderful lady. As we follow our h...ARTs, remember to keep your eyes on the prize. We WILL see this area become a destination for the arts! Steve Arts Alliance Mixers HALT DROUGHT!By Leslie Byrne and Tim Fliegel— Secretary TeamAs Secretary team of AAWM, we would like to corroborate that PICNIC IN THE PARK was indeed a success. In spite of the rain, lightening and thunder, dozens of creative types sloshed over spilling out of the Show Low City Main Ramada! Doc noted that we have proven that the Arts Alliance Mixer events bring precipitation to the White Mountains and have practically reversed the drought! 26” of snow, weeks of rain started by the Ice Cream Social and now this wet picnic. This mixer also featured a mini-auction—the first of many to come (see Pinetop Country Club CHOCOLATE AUCTION pg.2), where guests took home fantastic items for pennies on the dollar! Subway sandwiches, brownies, fudge and good wine lent for a cool, misty early evening repast. PS: We need a Membership Director/Team to join the Arts Alliance-if you are good with simple databases and have a computer —we need you! Support the arts and the White Mountains—leave a message for Leslie at 537-5682 and let me know you are interested in becoming an integral part of our team and the future of the arts in the White Mountains! Film Societyby Teddy Croney, ChairpersonAs you all know, in May the Film Society proudly premiered an independent film called “Pizza Men”, the filmmakers are local Arizona residents Rusty Odom and Richard Judd. The movie was their first full length feature and we had 123 folks attend the Film Society free screening. During the 4th of July weekend I was introduce to Dennis Moore, an Independent Film Producer and Director. We talked about independent films and how well the recent Independent Film “Pizza Men” had done in the White Mountains. We are looking for more participants! Dennis told me that he is in the process of making a western film in Arizona, which is currently in the editing stage. I told him that the Film Society would love to show his first full length film here in the White Mountains. So perhaps the film society will be showing there third independent film later this year. We’ll keep you posted! My third screening will be in January or February with Redemption. Right now the film is in editing. This film was shot in HD! We are planning to have Anthony Casanova and Dennis Moore available at the screening and a Q & A after movie. I will have more to report when I find out! If you or someone you know would be interested in working with the Film Society on these events please contact either Teddy Croney at 368-2010 to get signed up!
